In October 1989, the Secretary of the DMS wrote to the Health Development Unit in each Area Health Board requesting a list of all the midwives who were contracted to provide domiciliary midwifery services by the Minister of Health. Files 20001-3-027 through to file 20001-3-042 contains the responses. Domiciliary Midwife numbers were reported as follows: Northland (14); Auckland, Takapuna (14); Auckland, Central (20); Auckland South (12); Waikato (5); Bay of Plenty (9); Palmerston North (10); Taranaki (4); Tairawhiti (0); Napier (2); Wanganui (0); Wellington (22); Canterbury (8); Timaru (3); Otago (11); Southland (2).
Some midwives provided care in up to three different Area Health boards and therefore may appear on three separate lists.
These numbers do not reflect the number of midwives attending home births as many provided post-natal care only. For example, Wellington had 22 midwives with contracts but only 6 attended home births as well as providing antenatal and postnatal care.
Files 20001-3-012a*, 20001-3-012b*, 20001-3-012c* are all part of the one file marked 20001-3-012.
